With ELEAGUE being televised on TBS, and ESPN providing support in the mainstream world of Esports, Sky has announced a 24/7 eSports TV channel called Ginx, which their currently in the process of acquiring. Sky is a popular broadcasting network and telephone service in the United Kingdom, and they have launched a channel that will feature some of the largest eSports event around the world, including the Turner’s League. Their studio will be in King’s Cross, London, and will reflect media coverage, as they have seen massive growth in UK live events, such as the Faceit eSports Championship Series.
According to an interview with Emma Lloyd, Group Director of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships of Sky stated:
“This is an exciting new partnership which will help us develop our understanding of eSports and its audience. At Sky we are committed to bringing new programmes and channels such as GINX eSports TV to support and extend our leadership position in content. We look forward to working with Ginx and ITV on developing a channel which will capture the growing appetite for eSports.”
The move is a transition with mainstream media supporting the rapid growth of the Esports industry. According to Michiel Bakker, TV Chief Executive:
“I am also delighted about the prospect of Sky and ITV joining our shareholder roster, it goes without saying that the combined media footprint and expertise of both presents a significant opportunity for us to make a bigger impact, faster.”
